Pasture Raised Poultry

Orlopp Bronze Turkeys out on pasture
We are now taking orders for this years pasture raised chickens and turkeys!

We have been raising our chickens and turkeys on pasture since 2009.

Why do we do this?
Animals where not designed to live their life on a concrete floor, or in a feedlot environment.  We are trying to make a difference to how animals are raised that allows them to show their "natural animalness" and allows them to have a humane life for however long or short it may be.

We do not feed any medicated food to any of our poultry at any stage of their life here at the farm, they are given lush pastures to eat from as well as surplus vegetables from our garden.  All our poultry are raised from day old chicks.

Orlopp Bonze Turkeys date back to 1935 and are a cross of two bronze turkeys one from the US and one from the UK.  By selective breeding specific traits in the offspring bought about the required frame, size and shape and texture in meat of the Orlopp that we have come to know and love.

A great article to read on the breed of turkeys we raise at our farm.                                      Macleans 2008 article on Orlopp Bronze Turkeys.

We are now taking orders for this year pasture raised chickens and turkeys.

We raise four batches of chickens a year on pasture and they are available on the following months:
June
July
September
October
All chicken are whole, frozen, weigh between 5-7lbs and sold from the farm gate.

We raise Orlopp Bronze Turkeys on pasture for Thanksgiving and Christmas.  Turkeys are sold Fresh. Turkeys can weigh between 14-29lbs.

We also run a waiting list, if you would like to be added then please do contact the farm.

All Poultry must be collected and purchased from the Farm Gate.

Our poultry is pasture raised and fed non-medicated, non-hormone, GMO FREE vegetable grain rations.

We have no minimum order for poultry, but we do require a non-refundable $5.00 deposit per chicken per order and a $20.00 deposit for turkeys.

All our poultry is processed in a local government inspected abattoir.

Due to Ontario marketing board regulations we are limited to the number of Chickens and Turkeys we are able to raise each year.  Presently we are able to raise 300 chickens and 50 turkeys per year.  With this in mind please place your orders early.

Some of our customers feedback on our poultry:

Hi guys,

Just wanted to tell you that the turkey we bought from you was THE BEST TURKEY EVER!!!!! We've eaten a lot of turkeys but this was hands down the best.

Hana said (referring to the free range organic nature of these birds), "You can taste the happiness". Well, that's Hana's ironic sense of humour but I think she was right!

Thanks for letting us discover how good a fresh turkey can actually taste.

Happy Thanksgiving!
Marc and Hana

"After viewing many documentaries on appalling farming practices, our family began to give some serious thought to what we were actually eating.  We were fortunate enough to meet  Michael and Sally Knight of Strattons Farms at our local farmer's market.  One of the things we were most concerned with was chicken.  We now know that chicken is actually pink.  Who would have thought? No bleaching. No fat that you have to pull off before cooking. Once roasted, the bird is not swimming in 3 inches of fat.  We now can feed 5-6 people with a 5 pound bird, rather than 2, maybe 3 people.
The manner in which these animals are raised is outstanding.  They eat what chickens were meant to eat.  Their pasture is spacious and clean.  They truly are happy birds.  The proof is in the taste and texture of the meat.
Our guests always comment on how juicy and tender it is.
We could not be more pleased with our experience and Strattons Farm and will continue to spread the word."

Hi, Sally and Michael,

I hope that you had a good Thanksgiving. We were lucky with Saturday’s weather, for sure !

I am sending this email to let you know that (y)our turkey was just excellent. Everyone agreed that the flavour was lovely and the meat was very moist. I’ll be hard pressed to find one for Christmas that comes close. Please make sure that I am on your list for both Thanksgiving and Christmas turkeys next year!

Elizabeth

Hello you two
Just to say that the Thanksgiving turkey was awesome.  We brined it a la Michael Smith (6 hours in salt and brown sugar solution, then rinsed and left in the fridge overnight to dry) and it was golden and moist and gloriously flavourful.  Everyone said it was the best turkey ever.  Thank you both!
cheers
Andrew

Hi Sally & Mike

Just wanted to let you know that was an awesome amazing incredible turkey.  It was moist and delicious.  We fed eight people on just one side.

Thank you.
